About Me

After graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in Special Education, I taught in the mountains for a few years before I moved to Chapel Hill in 2007.  I thought I would teach forever.  I loved my students and having the personal connection with their families, but then I had a baby... and then another...

Now I live in downtown Durham with my husband, 2 children, 2 big dogs and 1 odd little cat and spend my days taking care of them.  We love living in such a dynamic, growing city and taking advantage of all it has to offer.

After the birth of my children I realized a dream I never knew I had; to help people have the birth and postpartum they want and deserve.  My two children had very different births.  The first was a normal healthy pregnancy and a labor and delivery filled with unwanted interventions and the birth of a baby who needed lots of medical care due to a rare and previously undetected genetic syndrome.  My second pregnancy was high risk with constant monitoring, ending with a beautiful and gentle unmedicated labor and birth followed by an easy postpartum period.

Having experienced two very different births firsthand, I have unique insights into the process.  Neither pregnancy, neither birth, was right or wrong.  Each happened exactly as my body and my baby needed.

My goal as a birth doula is to support you in your birth, whatever that may look like and however feels right to you. As a postpartum doula I strive to help ease your transition it to parenting and support you in the way you desire.

As January Harshe so eloquently said, "I don't care what kind of birth you have...a homebirth, scheduled cesarean, an epidural hospital birth or if you give birth alone in the woods next to a baby deer. I care that you had options, that you were supported in your choices and that you were respected."
